In March 2023, a major drug trafficking case emerged when 11.2 kilograms of ketamine and MDMA—commonly known as ecstasy—were found hidden in 157 tubes of toothpaste inside the luggage of four air hostesses arriving from Paris on a Vietnam Airlines flight. The discovery took place at Tan Son Nhat Airport in Ho Chi Minh City. The incident was not an isolated case but the start of a broader investigation into a large-scale drug smuggling network. The investigation revealed that the individual behind the operation, Ha Danh Nam—also known as "Huu Son"—had successfully arranged six other drug shipments. He was identified as the leader of a vast network involved in the trafficking of synthetic drugs. The case, later named "VN10" after the flight number, expanded to include over 2,700 suspects and involved transactions totaling 29,000 billion VND, which is approximately 960 million euros. The scale of the operation led to a major legal proceeding in Ho Chi Minh City, where 227 individuals linked to the network were to be tried. On September 3, the court delivered its verdict. Ha Danh Nam and ten of his accomplices received the death penalty, while nineteen others were sentenced to life imprisonment. Among those convicted were singer Chi Dan (real name Nguyen Trung Hieu), who received seven years in prison for participating in drug sales, and Nguyen Do Truc Phuong, known as the "charity fairy" due to her public charitable work, who was sentenced to six years. Spanish model Andrea Aybar Carmona, known as An Tay, received eight years. However, the four air hostesses were acquitted. Investigators concluded that they had been recruited to transport consumer goods and were unaware that the items they carried contained drugs. The case highlights the complexity of drug trafficking networks and the roles individuals can play, whether knowingly or unknowingly. While the main perpetrators faced severe penalties, the acquittal of the air hostesses underscores the importance of intent in legal proceedings. The investigation and subsequent trial have marked a significant step in Vietnam's efforts to combat drug trafficking and organized crime.
