A technical problem at the Prestwick air traffic control center in Scotland has caused disruptions across the UK, leading to delays and cancellations at several airports. National Air Traffic Services (Nats), which manages air traffic control for the UK from two centers—one in Swanwick, Hampshire, and the other in Prestwick—has confirmed that engineers are investigating the issue. To ensure safety, air traffic regulations have been implemented to manage the flow of flights while the problem is being resolved. The disruption has affected major airports including Manchester, Belfast City, Belfast International, Glasgow, and Aberdeen. This latest issue is not connected to a significant software failure that occurred less than two weeks ago, which had impacted over 2,000 flights. However, the current disruption has occurred just days after a report was released into that earlier incident, raising concerns about the reliability of air traffic control systems. The timing has drawn attention to the potential for recurring technical problems in the system. Airlines such as British Airways and easyJet have reported flight cancellations, with a total of 24 flights cancelled across UK airports, according to flight data analysts Cirium. However, the majority of flights are still operating normally. Flights departing from Scottish airports are experiencing more significant delays, while airports south of Manchester are largely unaffected. Passengers are being advised to check directly with their airlines for the most up-to-date information on their flights. A Nats spokesperson apologized for the disruption and confirmed that engineers are working to resolve the issue. An easyJet representative expressed concern about the resilience of Nats's systems and called for stronger measures to prevent repeated failures. British Airways also acknowledged the disruption, stating it is disappointing but emphasizing that the airline is taking steps to minimize the impact on its customers.
