Rennes Green Marathon events postponed due to planned protests in France over cost-of-living issues, impacting race schedules and safety.
Marathon events rescheduled in Rennes
Several events of the Rennes Green Marathon have been postponed due to numerous demonstrations planned for this Saturday. The various student movements organized in recent weeks across France will be joined by the yellow vests, trade unions, and farmers to protest against the high cost of living. These movements are expected to impact urban traffic, particularly in Rennes, where the Green Marathon was scheduled to take place.Rescheduling details announced
At the request of the Ille-et-Vilaine prefecture, the organization of the Rennes Green Marathon Group Interaction has rescheduled its four events originally planned for Saturday evening to Sunday afternoon. The affected events include the Féminie Yves Rocher 5km (4:30 PM), the Familiale Yves Rocher 5km (4:30 PM), the Mile Battle by TRC (2:45 PM), and the 10km Lamotte (3:00 PM). The main race remains unchanged and will take place on Sunday at 9:00 AM.Organizers aim to avoid cancellations
The organization stated it has "done everything possible" to avoid the cancellation of these Saturday evening races, which were supposed to precede the main 42km race on Sunday. It also mentioned that it will communicate later on the measures that can be put in place to accommodate participants who may not be able to attend on Sunday afternoon.Safety concerns drive rescheduling
The decision to reschedule the events responds to an absolute priority: ensuring the safety of all participants, volunteers, spectators, and teams mobilized for the event. Demonstrations can create tensions, as was the case Thursday evening in the Breton city during the match between Stade Rennais and OFI Crete in the Europa League, which saw Dutch supporters, friends of the Greek club, infiltrate a student procession and perform Nazi salutes.
