Spotify developing AI remix service

Spotify is working on an AI-based service that would allow users to remix songs by changing their musical style or the voice of the performer. This feature would be separate from the Premium subscription and would cost an additional four to five euros per month.

Feature under development since 2026

The idea was first reported in May 2026, and the service is now reportedly taking shape. Spotify may launch it in the first quarter of 2027, possibly around the Grammy Awards in February 2027, according to the Financial Times.

Negotiating with major record labels

To offer the service, Spotify is negotiating with major record labels like Sony Music, Warner Music, and Universal Music Group. These labels would need to grant Spotify the rights to use their artists' music in the AI remixes.

Artists remain hesitant

Despite agreements with labels, some major artists have been reluctant to participate. Sources say it has been harder to convince today’s top stars than older, established artists. Olivia Rodrigo, signed to Universal Music, reportedly said she would never agree to such a feature.

Spotify offering royalty assurances

To address concerns, Spotify has proposed that plays of AI-generated remixes would count the same as original songs. This would allow artists to earn royalties from the remixed versions of their tracks.
