Republican Congresswoman Lauren Boebert of Colorado has denied allegations that she had affairs with three of her former staff members, calling the claims "salacious bull****." The accusations were made by David Wheeler, co-founder of the Democratic-aligned political action committee (PAC) American Muckrakers, who filed a formal complaint with the House Ethics Committee on September 17. The complaint, first reported by the Colorado Times Recorder, claims that Boebert had relationships with her former district director Clarice Navarro, her chief of staff Raven Finegan, and her former chief of staff Jeffrey Small. Some of these encounters, according to the complaint, allegedly occurred during official work hours, in a district office, and in hotel rooms funded by a campaign committee. The complaint also alleges that a $200,000 payment was made to Navarro to "secure her silence" after she threatened to file her own ethics complaint. Navarro has called these allegations "entirely false and defamatory."
In response, Boebert released a video on Sunday in which she accused the media of running a "smear" and criticized journalists for not verifying the rules of the House Ethics Committee. She pointed out that the committee requires complaints from non-members to be certified in writing as being made in good faith. Additionally, the rules prohibit the committee from accepting non-member complaints within 60 days of an election, when the subject is a candidate. Boebert is currently running for re-election in November.
In the video, Boebert criticized Wheeler, calling him a "sloppy, desperate, obsessive hack." She referenced a previous claim by Wheeler that she had worked as an escort, a charge she denied and for which she obtained a temporary restraining order. In a statement to Newsweek, Wheeler said that Boebert is engaged in a "classic denial scheme" and claimed she believes she is not held accountable for her actions.
Boebert was first elected to Congress in 2020 and was once one of President Donald Trump’s strongest allies in the House. However, she recently faced Trump’s criticism after joining other Republicans in pushing for a vote to require the Justice Department to release the Epstein Files. Trump later threatened to support a primary challenger against her after she campaigned with Representative Thomas Massie, a Republican from Kentucky known for his criticism of Trump. Boebert has also disagreed with Trump on issues related to funding for the Iran war. In August, her 21-year-old son was arrested on child exploitation charges. Boebert has stated she loves her son and is taking the allegations seriously, saying she is praying for everyone involved during this difficult time. The Independent has reached out to the House Ethics Committee for a response.
