Côte d'Ivoire's gold ambitions

Côte d'Ivoire is aiming to become the top gold producer in Africa by 2035, a title currently held by Ghana. The country is focusing on expanding its gold industry to achieve this goal, with several mining projects in various stages of development.

Castle Minerals' drilling plans

Junior miner Castle Minerals is preparing a drilling program to evaluate the potential of its Nielle gold project. Initial estimates suggest the project could contain between 0.8 and 1.4 million ounces of gold, based on an independent assessment by the consulting firm Ledex Pty.

Data used for the estimates

The estimates from Ledex Pty were based on historical drilling and geochemical data collected at Nielle. This included data from 338 drill holes using a rotary air drill and 40 reverse circulation (RC) drill holes on target 1, the main prospect identified at the site.

Drilling campaign details

Castle Minerals plans to confirm the project's potential through a drilling campaign that will combine RC drilling and diamond drilling. However, the company has not yet specified when the work will begin or how much it will cost.

Permit and funding requirements

The start of the drilling campaign is dependent on obtaining an exploration permit from Ivorian authorities, which the company hopes to secure by the fourth quarter of 2026. To fund the project, Castle Minerals has also announced a fundraising effort targeting 4 million Australian dollars (2.8 million USD).

Other exploration progress

Other recent developments include Skylark Minerals reporting a significant increase in gold resources at its Zaranou project, now estimated at 1.20 million inferred ounces. Many Peaks Minerals also released its first resource estimate for its Ferké project, at 1.3 million ounces.

Future assessments and expert opinion

Future work will help better assess the potential of the Nielle project and determine how closely it aligns with Ledex's estimates. Ann Ledwidge, a principal consultant at Ledex, has described the project as having "significant development potential."

New mines contributing to growth

The opening of new mines, such as Koné by Montage Gold and Assafou by Endeavour Mining, is expected to support Côte d'Ivoire's efforts to become the leading African gold producer. These projects are part of the country's broader strategy to boost its gold output.
