Amelia Dimoldenberg, 32, has become the latest host of Saturday Night Live UK to take a shot at singer Ed Sheeran, 35, during this weekend's episode. Dimoldenberg, known for her role in Chicken Shop Dates, delivered an opening monologue that included a reference to her interviews with notable figures such as Idris Elba and Cher, as well as a humorous mention of a "world-famous redheaded puppet with a hand up his a**e." A photo of her with Elmo the Muppet was displayed on screen, prompting her to clarify that the image was not of the puppet in question. The screen then showed a photo of Dimoldenberg and Sheeran, who has faced criticism for his response to rapper Macklemore being removed from his USA tour. Social media users reacted to the Saturday Night Live UK episode, with some describing the roast as "brutal" and others joking about the show's focus on Sheeran. This comes a week after Saturday Night Live UK targeted Sheeran during its cold open and Weekend Update segments. In last week's show, a version of Sheeran played by Annabel Marlow commented on the dangers of AI, while Ania Magliano and Paddy Young took personal jabs at Sheeran during Weekend Update, referencing the Macklemore controversy and Sheeran's lazy eye. Sheeran had been set to perform at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, but the shows were cancelled due to bad weather. This follows a difficult period for Sheeran, during which several supporting acts and his own backing band dropped out of the tour in solidarity with Macklemore and his "free Palestine" message. Macklemore, real name Ben Haggerty, stated that he was given an "ultimatum" by billionaire Robert Kraft, who threatened that the tour would not continue at Gillette Stadium as long as Macklemore remained on the lineup. Sheeran clarified that the decision to remove Macklemore was made by the tour's promoters, not himself. He addressed the controversy on stage, apologizing for how the situation had developed and expressing concern about venues potentially "pre-approving" artists or their content. Macklemore has not publicly commented on Sheeran's statement but has announced a Free Palestine tour in Dublin, Paris, and London next month, with proceeds supporting the Palestinian people and movement. Saturday Night Live UK returns to Sky One and NOW TV on Saturday, October 3.
