Agricultural mechanization in Côte d'Ivoire

In Côte d'Ivoire, as in many countries in sub-Saharan Africa, the lack of agricultural equipment is hindering productivity improvements. The government's ambitions regarding mechanization open up investment opportunities for foreign machine suppliers.

Chinese company explores investment

The Chinese group Sinomach Hainan is considering establishing itself in Côte d'Ivoire in the rice and maize sectors, with investments in agricultural mechanization, seed production, and rice processing. This intention was expressed during a meeting held on October 27 in Abidjan between a delegation from the group and Bruno Nabagné Koné, the minister of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Food Production.

National development plan goals

An Ivorian market seeking to accelerate its mechanization, the interest of Sinomach Hainan comes at a time when Ivorian authorities want to accelerate agricultural mechanization. Within the framework of the National Development Plan (PND) 2026-2030, an investment opportunity sheet associated with the plan aims to increase the mechanization rate of farms from 12% to 40% by 2030.

Equipment gap in Côte d'Ivoire

The strategic diagnosis of the PND estimates the equipment level to be approximately 4.3 tractors per 1,000 hectares of cultivable land in Côte d'Ivoire, compared to a reference of 5 to 10 tractors per 1,000 hectares corresponding to the FAO's minimum mechanization target for emerging countries. The gap is even more pronounced with developed agricultural regions, particularly Europe and North America, where the equipment level exceeds 100 tractors per 1,000 hectares of arable land.

Sinomach Hainan's African strategy

An expanding experience in agricultural mechanization in Africa, Sinomach Hainan's interest in Côte d'Ivoire comes at a time when the company is developing its agricultural activities on the continent. In April 2025, it collaborated with YTO, an agricultural machinery manufacturer belonging to the same Chinese group, to deliver a Dongfanghong NLX1404 tractor to the China-Zambia Friendship Farm.

Previous African projects

A few weeks earlier, in February 2025, Sinomach Hainan signed a memorandum of understanding with Malagasy authorities to develop several agricultural projects, including pilot agricultural parks covering an announced area of 50,000 hectares. The program also includes a food processing unit, a fertilizer plant, and the training of technicians in the manufacturing of agricultural machinery.

Future of Ivorian investments

According to the Malagasy Ministry of Agriculture, these projects were still in the preparation phase in March 2025. These initiatives demonstrate Sinomach Hainan's interest in developing agricultural projects in Africa, particularly in equipment and related services. A possible establishment in Côte d'Ivoire could extend this dynamic to West Africa. However, it remains to be seen whether the interest shown to Ivorian authorities will result in concrete financial and industrial commitments.
