Valérie Pécresse, president of Île-de-France Mobilités (IDFM) and the Île-de-France region, has unveiled plans to introduce 100 autonomous shuttles by 2030, which will be accessible using the Navigo pass—a regional public transport subscription. During a press conference, IDFM outlined its vision for expanding autonomous public transport in the region, aiming to establish itself as a global leader in this field while reducing traffic congestion through the development of autonomous transport systems. The initiative is currently in the planning phase, with efforts focused on defining selection criteria for minivans, autonomous driving software, and related systems. These criteria will be used when the public tender is launched in 2027.
The first autonomous on-demand public transport shuttle is expected to arrive in 2028 in areas such as Paris-Saclay, Versailles Grand Parc, and Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines. These locations are home to numerous universities and research institutions, making them ideal test grounds for new mobility solutions. Autonomous shuttles will operate during off-peak hours and will be integrated into the Navigo subscription system, allowing users to access them seamlessly with their existing passes. The deployment phase of the project is expected to cost around 20 million euros annually.
IDFM aims to have approximately 20 autonomous shuttles in operation by the end of 2029, with the full rollout of the service planned for 2030, including more than 100 autonomous vehicles. Pécresse noted that while autonomous robotaxis for individual transport are emerging in Europe, they are still underutilized in regions like California, according to a recent American analysis. She emphasized the importance of integrating autonomous shuttles into the existing public transport network to enhance coverage, particularly in areas that are currently underserved or during unusual times such as late evenings or weekends.
The autonomous minivans, which can carry around a dozen passengers, will be selected based on technological reliability and safety standards. IDFM has a preference for European, and ideally French, suppliers to support local innovation and sustainability goals. The project is being developed in collaboration with Vedecom, a research institute specializing in decarbonized and autonomous mobility solutions. This partnership aims to ensure the project aligns with environmental and technological advancements in the field of mobility.
