Anonymity of the critic

An economic operator in Mayotte, who chose to remain anonymous, has criticized the scheduling of the Mayotte Economic Forum, set to take place in La Réunion on 28 and 29 October 2026, while an Employment Fair is planned in Mayotte for the same dates.

Focus on local needs

The operator expressed frustration that Mayotte's decision-makers will attend the forum in La Réunion instead of focusing on local needs, particularly nearly two years after Cyclone Chido, which caused significant damage to the territory.

Accusations of neo-colonization

The operator described the situation as "lamentable," accusing local officials of prioritizing the interests of neighboring departments over the future of Mayotte's youth. He claimed that the presence of Mayotte's leaders at the forum in La Réunion reflects a form of "neo-colonization," endorsed by authorities in Paris.

Loss of local control

He also criticized the political class for what he views as a moral corruption, with power shifting from Mahoran leaders to those in La Réunion. He pointed out that Mahorais have lost control over various sectors, including public procurement, transportation, education, and health, funded by public money in Mayotte.

Fishery restrictions

He also raised concerns about a ban on Mahoran fishermen operating in the exclusive economic zone of Mayotte, which he attributed to former prefect François-Xavier Bieuville, claiming it was done to benefit Reunion fishermen.

Importance of local event

The operator emphasized the importance of the Employment Fair in Mayotte, which he believes should be a priority for local decision-makers. He questioned why resources are being spent on organizing an event in La Réunion instead of supporting local economic initiatives.
