Apple licenses Ascend.io technologies

Apple has entered into an agreement with Ascend.io, an American company specializing in the automation of data engineering through AI agents, according to a report by 9to5Mac. This agreement is not a traditional acquisition, as Apple has obtained a license to Ascend.io's technologies, the possibility to recover certain patents, and the right to hire part of its employees.

Ascend.io's platform and AI integration

Founded in 2015, Ascend.io developed tools for companies that need to process and organize large amounts of data. Its platform allowed the creation of data pipelines, i.e., chains of processing tasked with retrieving information from different sources, transforming it, and routing it to other systems.

AI agents and automation

The company gradually integrated AI agents capable of taking over part of the repetitive tasks related to the creation and maintenance of these pipelines. The objective was, among other things, to reduce the manual interventions needed to operate these infrastructures.

Agreement details and European regulations

The terms of the agreement appear in a statement found on the European acquisitions register. This register exists thanks to the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which requires certain large platforms to inform the European Commission of certain operations. The number of employees involved, the patents concerned, and the financial terms of the agreement have not been specified.

Ascend.io's current status

Ascend.io has now disconnected its official website, which only displays a message announcing the gradual cessation of its activities. The company recalls having developed several generations of automation tools, up to its data engineering platform based on AI agents.

Apple's recent acquisition pattern

Apple has not indicated how it intended to use these technologies, which could be of interest to its internal infrastructures handling large volumes of data. This operation recalls several recent acquisitions by Apple. In February, the company had notably acquired Kuzu, a young Canadian company developing a graph-oriented database. More recently, Apple has also reached an agreement with Huxe, a specialist in AI-generated podcasts. In the latter case, the company had obtained a license to certain technologies and the possibility to hire employees, without acquiring the entire company.
