Battery-powered train launched in Occitanie

On August 31, the Occitanie Region, SNCF Voyageurs, and Alstom inaugurated the first battery-powered train in the region. This innovation is part of a broader effort to promote sustainable transportation and reduce carbon emissions.

Officials test train during quiet period

On October 15, Katy Guyot and Jean-Luc Gibelin, regional officials, boarded a TER train at Nîmes station for a short trip to Vauvert. The train was nearly empty due to the early morning time and the school vacation period, with only about fifteen passengers.

Operation aims to engage residents

The officials were part of "La Région à vos côtés," a regional initiative to meet residents and gather feedback on public policies. This operation includes about fifty meetings planned in the Gard department, not just on trains but across the entire region.

Officials emphasize public engagement

Katy Guyot explained the initiative's goal of understanding public needs and improving policies. She expressed enthusiasm for the direct interaction with residents, highlighting the president of the region’s emphasis on listening to the public and addressing their concerns.

Battery-powered train boosts mobility

Jean-Luc Gibelin highlighted the benefits of the battery-powered train, which allows for more frequent service and better alignment with local work schedules. The train has made 80% of the stops on the Nîmes-Vauvert line, showing the technology's potential for wider adoption.

Rising interest in TER services

The officials noted a significant increase in TER usage, with a 13% to 20% rise in passengers since the beginning of September, partly due to rising fuel prices. This trend supports the shift toward public transport as a more economical and eco-friendly option.

Regular passenger shares positive experience

Sébastien, a regular commuter on the Nîmes-Vauvert line, shared his satisfaction with the train. He has been using it for years instead of his car, finding it more cost-effective and environmentally friendly, with annual costs around 395 euros.

Regional outreach continues

For over five months, officials and representatives have been traveling across Occitanie’s 13 departments to engage with residents. This effort includes young people and aims to ensure that the region’s policies reflect the needs and expectations of its diverse population.
