French Tech sees record funding

The European tech sector in the third quarter of 2026 saw a significant increase in funding, with French Tech startups raising 4.2 billion euros, a 50 percent increase compared to the previous year. However, a closer look reveals that the French AI company Mistral alone accounted for 3 billion euros of this total.

Mistral dominates the funding surge

When this single mega-operation is excluded, funding within the broader ecosystem is actually in decline. This suggests that the overall growth in French Tech funding is largely driven by a single, exceptionally large investment in the AI sector.

US venture deals show similar trends

Across the Atlantic, venture deals in the United States reached 267 billion dollars in the first quarter of 2026, while exit operations reached 347 billion dollars. However, once the five largest deals and exits are removed, these figures drop by more than 70 percent and 85 percent respectively, according to Aarish Shah, CEO of EmergeOne.

Media focus on high-profile deals

This divergence highlights the challenge faced by mid-market tech companies seeking media attention. Tech journalists are often drawn to the most significant market signals, such as initial investments in AI and exceptional liquidity events. However, for B2B SaaS platforms, established scale-ups, or cleantech companies, achieving significant media coverage requires a different approach.

Shift to consistent PR strategy

An effective press relations strategy involves moving away from the "announcement hunt" logic and returning to the fundamentals of public relations. Instead of waiting for a single "spectacular" moment, regularly feeding journalists with updates and progress can build familiarity and recognition over time.

Building relationships with journalists

Prioritizing relationships over transactional exchanges is crucial. Building authentic relationships with journalists well before they are needed and offering exclusive data or insights can foster long-term trust. A media-first content strategy, such as op-eds and expert speaking engagements, can also attract editorial attention, provided the content provides real added value to the media's readers.

Leveraging digital channels

Developing one's own channels, such as founder-led newsletters or technical articles, can complement media coverage. Cultivating the digital presence of executives further enhances credibility and increases the likelihood of being cited in articles.

Long-term media strategy

Gaining sustainable media attention involves a long-term strategy centered around regularity, presence on multiple channels, and a genuine commitment to adding value to the conversations that drive the sector.
