Court rejects election appeals

The administrative court in Montpellier has dismissed appeals from Cécile Barral and Gilles Parmentier, who ran second and third in the recent municipal elections in Mauguio-Carnon. Both candidates contested the results, but the court upheld the victory of Pierre-Martin Chazot, who was elected as mayor on March 22.

Chazot retains mayor's position

Pierre-Martin Chazot won the election with 3,789 votes, or 38.16% of the total, securing a narrow 121-vote lead over Cécile Barral, who received 36.94% of the votes. The court’s decision means Chazot will remain in office as mayor of Mauguio-Carnon.

Barral challenges campaign practices

Cécile Barral argued that Chazot improperly used his column in the municipal magazine during the election period. She cited multiple instances where he referenced his website, campaign networks, and a January article announcing a vote on his project by residents on March 15 and 22. She also criticized the final days of the campaign, which included statements questioning her political ties.

Parmentier raises additional concerns

Gilles Parmentier, from the National Rally, also challenged Chazot’s use of the municipal bulletin and raised concerns about the use of a contact list from an association during the campaign. However, the court did not find these issues sufficient to overturn the election result.

Barral accepts ruling but questions ethics

Cécile Barral acknowledged the court’s decision but emphasized that the ruling focused on the election itself, not the ethical conduct of the candidates. She explained that she initiated the appeal due to the narrow margin and the presence of what she saw as legal and moral irregularities. She accepted the ruling calmly and stated she felt she had fulfilled her duty.

Barral condemns campaign conduct

Barral continued to criticize the tone of the campaign, calling out personal attacks and verbal violence. She stressed that even if the court did not find these actions illegal, they did not make them morally acceptable. She expressed a belief that there was a gap between the principles the candidates claimed to uphold and their actual behavior during the election.
