One of Ocean City, New Jersey’s most recognizable landmarks is set to disappear, marking the end of an era for many who have fond memories of the site. The Ferris wheel at the once-thriving Gillian’s Wonderland Pier, which closed in 2024, will soon be demolished. The pier, a popular tourist destination for decades, was purchased in 2021 by real estate developer Eustace Mita, who described the site as "decrepit and decaying" and emphasized that time is not on their side. The Ferris wheel, which opened with the pier in 1965, has been worn down by years of exposure to salt air, making it difficult to preserve. According to Mita, the wheel’s bolts and key parts have corroded so severely that it cannot be disassembled and reassembled elsewhere. For many locals, the Ferris wheel was more than just an attraction—it was a symbol of childhood and community. Andrew Boylan, who worked at the pier for 13 years, called it "a big staple of Wonderland" and said its removal feels like losing a piece of history. Stu Newman, who visited the pier as a child, acknowledged the technical challenges of preserving the wheel but also emphasized its emotional value to people who rode it over the years. Mary Anne Munning, who visited the site to take a final photo of the Ferris wheel, described it as a "cornerstone of Ocean City," with countless memories tied to it. The Ferris wheel’s fate is tied to the future of the pier itself. In June, the Ocean City Council voted to label the former Gillian’s Wonderland Pier as "in need of rehabilitation," paving the way for Mita’s plan to build a 252-room oceanfront hotel on the site. Initially, Mita had proposed preserving the Ferris wheel, raising it 10 feet to avoid damage from the surrounding environment. That project was expected to cost $1.5 million. However, Mita’s plan has not yet received final approval, and the city council’s designation is currently under legal challenge. Several community groups have filed a lawsuit to overturn the council’s decision, arguing that the designation was made without sufficient public input or justification. The legal battle adds uncertainty to the future of the site, as well as the fate of the Ferris wheel. For now, the iconic structure remains standing, a silent witness to the memories it helped create, as the community waits to see what comes next.
