Christine Goerke, an American soprano, has founded VOX Detroit, a new organization designed to offer professional opportunities for artists in the region. Goerke has been performing at the Metropolitan Opera since her debut in 1995, taking on no fewer than fifteen roles, including iconic characters such as Brünnhilde from Der Ring des Nibelungen, Turandot from Turandot, and Elektra from Elektra. Based in Michigan and deeply connected to Detroit, Goerke previously served as an associate artistic director at Detroit Opera, where she helped revamp the young artists program. In 2024, she stepped down from her full-time role to become an artistic consultant, continuing to support the arts in the city. Through VOX Detroit, Goerke aims to highlight the versatility of the human voice by blending opera with cabaret, musical comedy, recitals, songs, poetry, and spoken theater. The organization is also focused on fostering connections between Detroit-based artists and performers from other regions. The first event, Beyond the Aria, will be held on April 18, 2027, at the Gem Theatre in a cabaret-style setting. Goerke will perform alongside baritone Paulo Szot, who won a Tony Award for his role in South Pacific. The evening will feature both established and emerging artists, accompanied by piano and under the musical direction of Craig Terry. A few days later, on April 24, VOX Detroit will collaborate with the Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts to present a semi-staged version of Pagliacci as part of the Classic Opera Series. The production will be directed by Suzanne Acton, with Errin Duane Brooks as Canio, Maria Natale as Nedda, Paulo Szot as Tonio, Jacob Surzyn as Silvio, and Leo Williams as Beppe. The Detroit Youth Choir will also participate in the performance.
