John Obi Mikel, a former Chelsea player, has criticized the club's transfer strategy, suggesting that their failure to bring in a key player last summer is impacting the team's performance under manager Xabi Alonso. While Chelsea started the season strongly, they have recently struggled, suffering losses and draws in their last few matches. In six games across all competitions, the team has scored 18 goals but conceded 12, indicating a dip in form and defensive stability. Alonso made efforts to strengthen the defense by signing goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez and Maxence Lacroix over the summer. However, Mikel believes more reinforcements are necessary. He specifically pointed out that the absence of Moises Caicedo, who has only played 14 minutes this season due to a calf injury, is a major concern. Mikel argued that Caicedo's energy and ability to protect the back four would significantly improve the team's performance once he returns. With Caicedo sidelined, Alonso has relied on Romeo Lavia and Reece James in midfield, with James no longer being used as a right-back. Mikel noted that the team lacks a traditional center-midfielder after Enzo Fernandez left for Manchester City in a £125 million deal. A potential transfer for Lamine Camara from Monaco fell through, which Mikel expressed frustration about, as he believes the club needs two holding midfielders to shield the defense effectively. Mikel emphasized that players like Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers, and Joao Pedro are not ideally suited for defensive roles. He believes Caicedo's stamina and energy will be crucial in making the team more solid once he is fit. There is a possibility that Caicedo could be available for Chelsea's upcoming match against Brentford, which could provide a much-needed boost to the team's performance.
