Mauricio Pochettino, the former manager of Tottenham Hotspur, has said he would consider returning to the club even if it were in the Championship, England’s second-tier league. However, he explained that timing issues made a return impossible. Tottenham had considered Pochettino as a potential replacement for Thomas Frank, who was sacked in February, but Pochettino was under contract with the United States national team until after the 2022 World Cup. When interim manager Igor Tudor struggled, the club eventually hired Roberto De Zerbi, who accepted a long-term deal. Pochettino said he felt the opportunity to return to Spurs had passed, as the timing was never ideal. Pochettino has long been linked with high-profile managerial roles, including positions at Real Madrid, Manchester United, and the England national team. However, he has now committed to coaching the United States men’s national team through 2030, signing a new four-year contract. He has acknowledged that coaching England in the future might be controversial due to his Argentinian nationality and the historical tensions between Argentina and England, particularly after their intense World Cup semi-final clash. Pochettino believes football should remain separate from politics and is open to the idea of coaching England one day, though he stressed it would not be an immediate consideration. Pochettino has focused on building the United States national team, leading them to a strong start in the World Cup before a 4-1 loss to Belgium in the last 16. He expressed confidence in the team’s progress and the support from fans. With a four-year contract in place, Pochettino feels a greater sense of responsibility and long-term commitment to the U.S. project, emphasizing the need for a clear vision and sustained development. Reflecting on his time at Tottenham, Pochettino expressed respect for the club and its former chairman, Daniel Levy, who was dismissed last September. He acknowledged the emotional difficulty of being sacked and suggested Levy might be feeling similar emotions now. Pochettino remains connected to Tottenham, supporting Harry Kane’s chances of winning the Ballon d’Or and noting his satisfaction with De Zerbi’s substantial transfer budget. Now, Pochettino is focused on the next phase of his career with the United States national team, aiming to build a strong and competitive squad for the future.
