OpenAI introduces a new feature to lock ChatGPT conversations with a PIN or biometrics, offering users greater privacy control.
New security feature for ChatGPT
OpenAI has introduced a new feature that allows users to lock specific ChatGPT conversations using a PIN code or biometric authentication like Face ID or Touch ID. This option is available on compatible devices and can be activated through a menu in the app.How to lock a conversation
To lock a conversation, users open the three-dot menu in the app and select the "Lock Conversation" option. Once locked, the conversation is moved to a "Locked Conversations" section in the Projects tab and is no longer visible in the regular history, pinned chats, or search results.Availability and deployment
The feature is available to all ChatGPT users, regardless of whether they have a free or paid subscription. It works on web browsers, iOS, Android, and new apps for macOS and Windows. OpenAI is rolling out the feature gradually, and while there are no geographic restrictions, it may not be immediately available on all French accounts.Important user warnings
Users are warned that if they forget their PIN, they may permanently lose access to their locked conversations. Resetting the PIN will delete all locked conversations, along with any files or information protected by it. OpenAI support cannot recover this data, but users can change their PIN without losing data if they remember the old one.Limitations of the feature
OpenAI explains that the locking feature does not use end-to-end encryption and does not change how long data is stored or how it is used to improve the AI model. Additionally, any information ChatGPT had already learned before a conversation was locked is not automatically deleted.Use cases and user advice
The feature is especially useful for protecting sensitive or personal conversations on shared devices. However, users are advised to choose a PIN they will not forget, especially if they plan to switch devices in the future.
