Marseille offers affordable funeral services

Marseille is one of the few cities in France that provides municipal funeral services, allowing residents to bury their loved ones with dignity at a lower cost. This service is described as more affordable compared to private companies, with an average cost of 1,800 euros for funerals that include a procession, secular ceremony, funeral operators, and a solid wood coffin.

Coffin options and pricing

The coffins available range from "very simple" pine wood to oak wood, according to Amélie, a funeral counselor at the municipal funeral services. In contrast, private companies charge between 3,000 and 4,000 euros for similar services, with one private funeral operator stating that the simplest ceremony can cost between 3,500 to 4,500 euros.

Residents praise the service

Residents who have used the municipal service have praised it for its affordability and professionalism. Michele, a 68-year-old retiree, described the service as "cheaper and these are very competent people," adding that it was "perfect, we had a welcome. They took the time."

Positive feedback from attendees

Julie, who was also present at the cemetery, confirmed these sentiments. She highlighted the efficiency and care provided by the municipal team, reinforcing the positive experiences of others who have used the service.

Limited public funeral services in France

Across France, there are approximately 100,000 funeral services recorded annually, with only 500 being public. This number is considered too low for the city of Marseille, according to Julien Rossi, the municipal councilor in charge of cemetery management and funeral services.

Marseille's commitment to public service

He expressed pride in the municipal agency, stating that it enables the "social dignity" of families during times of great pain and described it as "the quintessence of public service."
