Four-year-old Zaahir Jan Feizi was visiting his grandmother at Margate’s QEQM Hospital when he was struck by a single-decker bus on a zebra crossing near the hospital’s A&E entrance. The incident occurred shortly after 4 p.m. on August 7 last year. Zaahir, from Canterbury, was playing chase with his brother when he ran into the road and was hit by the bus. He was rushed to the hospital but died from multiple internal injuries. At an inquest held at Oakwood House in Maidstone, the coroner concluded that Zaahir’s death was an accident and that the bus driver could not have seen him. The Stagecoach bus was traveling at 5 miles per hour when the collision occurred. The driver, referred to as Witness A, was granted anonymity and described the incident as having occurred during a "normal regular day." The driver had started work at 8:03 a.m. and had two breaks during the day before driving the C Loop route, which passes through the QEQM Hospital. Witness A said they were due to finish work at 6:49 p.m. and had "sufficient breaks" before the collision. They described coming around a corner outside the hospital entrance and seeing an elderly man, Mr. Abbott, crossing the road with a walking stick. Witness A stopped the bus and waited for Mr. Abbott to cross, which took some time as he appeared unwell. Almost immediately after pulling away, the driver heard a young boy screaming to stop and felt a bump with the bus, believing they had run something over. Witness A stopped the bus and applied the handbrake, discovering Zaahir had been hit. They stated they would have stopped immediately if they had seen Zaahir running into the road or a hazard. Mr. Abbott, who was at the scene, told the coroner that he turned quickly upon seeing Zaahir but it happened so quickly that there was no chance for anyone to stop him. Investigating officer DC Victoria Steward from the serious collision unit stated that officers arrived at the scene four minutes after the crash. CCTV footage showed Zaahir running from the hospital exit and not stopping as he ran into the road. At that moment, the bus had just pulled away, and Zaahir struck the front of the bus. DC Steward noted that the CCTV footage showed no way the bus driver could have seen Zaahir. A pathologist ruled Zaahir died from multiple internal injuries. The coroner, Sarah Clarke, concluded there was no evidence the driver was impaired or distracted and that the evidence did not establish the driver could have avoided the collision. She stated that Zaahir’s death was an accident. Zaahir’s mother, Azaria Green, who attended the inquest, informed the coroner that the East Kent Hospitals Trust has changed the road markings outside the entrance of QEQM and added railings to prevent such an incident from happening again. Ms. Green also mentioned that the East Kent Hospitals Trust has made changes to the area following the incident.
