Twelve books have been chosen for the 2026 Best Foreign Book Price, an award created in 1948 to recognize foreign literature translated into French. This year's shortlist includes nine works of fiction and three non-fiction titles, offering a snapshot of the latest international literary trends. The selection was announced by Manuel Carcassonne and Anne Freyer, the award's secretaries, who mentioned that some of the listed authors are already being considered for other prestigious literary honors.
Among the fiction selections is Lazar by Swiss author Nelio Biedermann, a sweeping family story that covers the fall of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, European conflicts, and the 1956 Hungarian uprising. Biedermann, who is only 23, is also featured in the first selection of the Foreign Femina, another notable literary prize. Other fiction titles include The Party by Lucy Fricke, Only One Day by Marco Lodoli, The Color That Will Please You by Souvankham Thammavongsa, Gypsy, but the most beautiful of all by Kristian Novak, The Bee Sting by Irish author Paul Murray, The Audition by Katie Kitamura, Fonseca by Jessica Francis Kane, and John, Son of John by Douglas Stuart.
The non-fiction category features Pessoa. The Work-Life by Richard Zenith, a biography of the Portuguese poet and writer Fernando Pessoa; A Nation of Strangers by Ece Temelkuran, which examines themes of exile and identity; and The Oligarch's Son by Patrick Radden Keefe, a detailed look into the death of a young man connected to a wealthy Russian family.
The Best Foreign Book Price has been supported by Sofitel since 2011 and will be awarded at Sofitel Paris Le Faubourg. The jury will now review the shortlisted books to determine the final winners, following the 2025 winners Carys Davies for Clarification and Leila Guerriero for The Call. The current jury includes Daniel Arsand, Nathalie Crom, Gérard de Cortanze, Catherine Enjolet, Christine Jordis, Jean-Claude Lebrun, Alexis Liebaert, Joëlle Losfeld, Anne-Marie Métailié, and Joël Schmidt.
