The Indian low-cost airline Akasa Air is reportedly in talks with Boeing to order an additional 200 units of the 737 MAX aircraft. The information was reported by Bloomberg and later picked up by Reuters. Neither Akasa Air, which is based in Mumbai, nor Boeing, the American manufacturer, has officially commented on the reports. A decision is expected early in 2027, with the contract likely to be finalized in the second half of the same year. If this order is confirmed, it would significantly boost Akasa Air's growth plans, extending them well beyond 2032. Launched commercially in 2022, the airline currently operates 43 737 MAX aircraft and has a firm order for 226 more from the same family of planes, which are equipped with CFM International LEAP-1B engines. This means that even after receiving all the planes currently on order, Akasa Air would still have 183 more to receive before considering new acquisitions. With the proposed additional 200 aircraft, Akasa Air would surpass the total of 426 737 MAX aircraft ordered since the airline’s inception. If the company maintains its current fleet size, its delivery portfolio would exceed 380 aircraft. This is a large number for a company that is only four years old, but it aligns with the rapid expansion of the Indian domestic market and its growing network of medium-haul international routes. The decision to base its entire fleet on the 737 MAX follows a standard industry strategy. It reduces costs related to crew training, maintenance, and spare parts management, while making it easier to plan flight schedules. Akasa Air uses the 737-8 and 737-8-200 high-density variants, which are well-suited to its low-cost business model. When Boeing announced its first order of 72 aircraft in 2021, it noted that these specific versions were chosen to help Akasa Air enter the market effectively. The future order would also reinforce Boeing's position in India, a country that has become increasingly important for the two major global aircraft manufacturers. Akasa Air, the third major Indian airline, is on a path of rapid growth, aiming to increase its capacity by 30% by March 2027. Operationally, the airline has been expanding its fleet steadily. It received its 42nd aircraft in early September — a 737 MAX 8-200 — and has since grown its fleet to 43 aircraft. This indicates that deliveries are beginning to translate into tangible growth for the airline.
