Jobseekers using artificial intelligence to create their CVs may be less successful than those who write them manually, according to a study by Kickresume, a job resource site. The research compared AI-written CVs to those created entirely by humans, focusing on sales and marketing roles. Human-written CVs received a positive response from 31 percent of the 200 applications reviewed, while AI-only CVs were the least successful, with only 10 percent receiving a positive initial response. This suggests that, in some cases, human-written CVs may be more effective in catching the attention of hiring managers.
However, the study found that when jobseekers tailored AI-written CVs to match the specific job description, the response rate improved significantly. In this case, the positive response rate rose to 18 percent. Peter Duris, CEO of Kickresume, noted that this improvement nearly doubled the response rate compared to AI-only CVs. He explained that incorporating language directly from the job posting helps demonstrate a better fit for the role and also improves readability for applicant tracking systems—software used by many employers to screen resumes.
The research highlights that recruiters and employers value the ability of jobseekers to differentiate themselves. It also suggests that people are better at understanding their own strengths and personality than AI models, which may not capture the nuances of an individual’s experience or skills. However, the study had limitations, as it did not include additional materials like cover letters, which can also influence hiring decisions.
Results from this study may vary depending on the industry or type of job, as different sectors may have different expectations for resumes and applications. While AI can be a useful tool, the findings suggest that personalization and human input remain important factors in creating effective job applications.
