Jeremy Clarkson’s partner, Lisa Hogan, has raised concerns about potential beer shortages in the UK, citing a poor barley harvest caused by severe droughts this summer. Hogan, who co-manages their Diddly Squat farm in Oxfordshire with Clarkson, explained that extreme weather conditions have significantly reduced barley yields. This has led to fears of a decrease in beer production, with Hogan stating, "There will be less beer all around." While last year’s harvest was low, the quality of the grain was better. This year, however, both the quantity and quality of the barley have been affected by a second consecutive year of dry weather. According to the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB), this year’s barley harvest is expected to be the worst on record. Clarkson’s own beer brand, Hawkstone, has experienced growing popularity, with sales reaching £44.9 million in the year ending March. Launched in 2021 using barley grown at Diddly Squat, the brand has expanded from a single lager to include a range of beers, ciders, and spirits. Clarkson has become a prominent advocate for farmers’ rights, especially after sharing his farming experiences in the Amazon series "Clarkson’s Farm," which has brought attention to the challenges faced by those in the agricultural sector. Hogan and Clarkson, who have been together since 2017, recently won the reality docuseries prize at the National Television Awards for "Clarkson’s Farm." Clarkson described the award as a "thrill" and suggested that voters might have been supporting farmers, acknowledging the difficulties of the farming profession. He also revealed that he was away for two weeks undergoing prostate cancer treatment, which he said is now in remission. He noted that he missed part of the harvest due to his treatment, highlighting the personal challenges faced by those in agriculture.
