Misleading audio clip broadcast

A misleading audio clip falsely attributed antisemitic remarks to Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of La France Insoumise, was broadcast during Guillaume Erner's morning show on France Culture on October 29. The clip, which was unsourced and taken from an X account, was truncated and suggested that Mélenchon had made statements comparable to those of Jean-Marie Le Pen, who has been condemned for antisemitism.

Audio clip misrepresented context

According to the Arcom, the audio excerpt misrepresented statements that Mélenchon had made in a different context and on a different subject. The clip was taken from an X account and was not properly attributed or verified before being broadcast.

Presenter admits sourcing clip

Guillaume Erner admitted to having found the audio clip on social media. The broadcast created a heated controversy, and La France Insoumise announced that it had filed a complaint with the Arcom.

Arcom criticizes broadcast

The Arcom called on Radio France not to repeat such a "failure to meet the requirements of honesty and rigor in reporting." In June, the public radio station and the presenter had previously apologized, but these were considered insufficient by Mélenchon, who called for avoiding the France Culture morning show.

Professional societies react

The Society of Producers of France Culture (SPDC) had denounced the audio clip, while the SDJ (journalists' societies) of France Culture and Radio France had distanced themselves from Erner, considering that this affair "tainted the credibility of the broadcast."

Presenter faces disciplinary action

The presenter of the morning show had been subject to a "disciplinary sanction," the details of which were not specified. Guillaume Erner, who has been at the head of the "Matins de France Culture" since 2015, is still on air but several changes have been imposed by the management, such as the removal of the daily opinion piece he used to host.
