Trevor Nelson, a well-known presenter on BBC Radio 2 and 1Xtra, has shared that he will be returning to his radio hosting duties after undergoing surgery for a brain tumour. The 62-year-old announced the news on Friday (2 September), revealing that he would start his return to the airwaves with his afternoon show on Radio 2 from 2-4pm on Monday (7 September). He will also return to his 1Xtra show the following Sunday (13 September) at 11am. In a statement, Nelson said he would be "slowly easing my way back on to the airwaves from Monday on Radio 2 and next Sunday on 1Xtra." He expressed excitement about rejoining his audience and admitted that his "world was turned upside down" when he received the diagnosis. He had been taking time off work to recover, explaining that he had been stepping back from his commitments due to illness, as he had mentioned earlier in the summer. Nelson acknowledged the public interest in his health, noting he had received many messages asking about his condition. While he avoided going into too much detail, he explained that he was "minding my own business and then it was discovered that I had a brain tumour." He described the surgery as "very serious" but said it went "incredibly well." He has been recuperating at home, along with some post-operative treatment, and now feels "energised and almost back to myself." Nelson made a brief appearance on Sara Cox’s Breakfast Show on Friday (4 September) at 8:50am, joking about being back on the airwaves. He mentioned he would be returning to the Radio 2 studio, behind the microphone, and spinning records. He also invited listeners to join him on Monday afternoon from 2pm, suggesting they ask their smart speakers to play BBC Radio 2. Nelson will begin with two days next week, three the following week, and four the week after that, before returning full-time from Monday 28 September. During his absence, DJ Spoony and Clara Amfo have been covering his shows.
