Polestar 2 nears end of production

The Polestar 2, an all-electric sedan produced in China for over six years, is approaching the end of its production run. Around 200,000 units have been made, and the Swedish automaker is preparing to launch a new model by 2027.

Production to end in China

According to Norwegian media outlet TV2, the final units of the Polestar 2 will be made at the Taizhou plant in China. While Polestar has not officially confirmed the end of production, several signs point to this conclusion.

Polestar 2's role in brand growth

Launched in 2020, the Polestar 2 was the company's first large-scale electric vehicle and helped raise its profile in Europe. It has competed with models like the Tesla Model 3 and has seen several updates, including a major 2023 redesign that changed the drive system of single-motor versions.

Availability and customization changes

In Norway and Sweden, customers are now being directed to existing stock, while in France, the Polestar 2 is still available in three versions. However, French buyers can no longer customize their cars, signaling the end of production.

New model in 2027 with unclear details

Polestar plans to introduce a completely new model by 2027, but details about its design, technology, and where it will be made are still unknown. While European production is one possibility, no official confirmation has been given.

Polestar faces slow growth challenges

The transition comes as Polestar struggles with slow growth, with global sales increasing by just 0.4% in the first half of 2026. The company has also lowered its sales targets for the year, with Europe now making up about 80% of its sales.
