In Bordeaux, on October 1st, a trial continued against a 34-year-old man accused of raping and sexually assaulting eight women. The assistant prosecutor, Cécile Kauffman, requested the maximum penalty of thirty years in prison, along with a two-thirds safety period and a care injunction, which would restrict the accused’s freedom after release. The verdict was expected later the same day. The accused, who is currently in provisional detention for five years, is being tried for seven rapes and three sexual assaults. These incidents occurred with women he met through dating apps, which he allegedly used to isolate his victims. In her closing statement, Kauffman described the accused as "particularly dangerous," using strong language such as "absolute beastliness" and "sadism." She accused him of creating a "formidable predation system" by using dating apps to target women. The accused, who has no known profession and was previously convicted of rape in Haute-Garonne, was on conditional release at the time of the offenses. He was first reported to authorities in 2021 after one of the victims came forward with a detailed account of the abuse. One victim described how the accused forced her to perform sexual acts while showing her images of young girls and playing a video of a man appearing to rape a female corpse. He held her tightly by the neck and threatened to kill her if she did not comply. In custody, the accused claimed he recorded their interactions on a dictaphone as "proof" of consent, a method he used with other victims. He told investigators he wanted to ensure there was "no ambiguity in my behavior" due to his previous legal troubles. An examination of the accused’s phone revealed approximately 100 audio and video files of a sexual nature dating back to September 2020, shortly after his release from conditional release. The accused insisted that all these relationships were consensual, but the files showed that several women had expressed opposition. Kauffman highlighted the "particularly violent sexual practices" the accused imposed on his victims, as well as his attraction to themes such as necrophilia, pedophilia, and incest.
