Roku, a company that makes streaming devices and software for watching TV and video content, is giving users a chance to try out new apps through a program called Roku Labs. This initiative allows any Roku device owner to access experimental apps via a new tile on their home screen. The first set of apps includes Backdrops Studio, which lets users personalize the background of their Roku device with images and artwork; Roku Immerse, which offers a new way to set custom screensavers; Roku Weather, a dedicated weather app; and Roku Stocks, a built-in tool for tracking stock prices. These apps are still in development, and Roku encourages users to test them and share feedback that could shape their future improvements. Roku has also outlined several upcoming features for its platform. In the months ahead, the company plans to update the home screen layout for users in Mexico and Brazil, introduce voice-activated weather forecasts, and enhance the search experience by explaining why content appears in a particular order. These updates aim to make the Roku experience more personalized and user-friendly. In addition to these features, Roku is making its Roku LT OS open source. This operating system is used in Roku remotes and smart home devices. By open-sourcing the OS, Roku is allowing developers to access and modify the code for free. To support this, Roku will provide a video training series to help users understand how to use the development kit and apply it to their own projects. This move reflects Roku’s broader strategy to engage with the developer community and encourage innovation on its platform. By allowing users and developers to experiment and contribute, Roku is positioning itself as a more flexible and open ecosystem for smart home and streaming technology.
