Early career challenges

At the beginning of the 1970s, Sylvester Stallone was trying to make a name for himself in the film industry. Before achieving international fame with the success of Rocky in 1976, the actor attended auditions, including one for The Godfather by Francis Ford Coppola.

Audition experience

Stallone confirmed during an interview on France 2 that he had indeed attended an audition for the cinematic classic. He described the experience as "really humiliating," noting that there were 200 people present and he did not even manage to get hired as a background actor.

Unexpected connection

Stallone later hired the person who had refused to hire him to become his agent, remarking, "I told you so!" He did not specify the role he was auditioning for but noted it would be amusing to imagine him in the costume of one of the Corleone brothers.

Later gangster roles

He would later have other opportunities to portray gangsters, notably in Capone, The Italian Job, Get Carter, or Mafia Love. He has since become a godfather of the underworld in the successful series Tulsa King, broadcast on Paramount+.

Career reflections

In addition, Stallone has spoken candidly about his career in his autobiography, One Step at a Time, published on October 7 by Flammarion. The book begins in the summer of 1969, detailing the journey of young Sylvester Stallone, who exited the New York bus terminal with only an old notebook, 80 dollars, and a dream: to become an actor.

Path to success

His odyssey from that bleak terminal to the 1977 Oscar ceremony in Los Angeles is described as an extraordinary example of perseverance and self-belief, marked by constant rejection and small miracles.
