Siemens wins major TGV train order in Spain

Siemens has secured a major contract worth 1.2 billion euros to supply 30 high-speed TGV trains to Spain’s national railway company, Renfe. The deal, described as the most important in Renfe’s history, was won over a competitor, Hitachi, after a competitive selection process.

Renfe’s high-speed train requirements

Renfe launched the tender in March to purchase up to 40 next-generation high-speed trains. The new trains must have at least 450 seats and include advanced technologies, signaling systems, and interior designs to improve capacity, accessibility, and onboard services.

Siemens’ contract details and delivery timeline

Siemens will supply 30 TGV trains from its Velaro Novo family and related maintenance for 1.218 billion euros, which is 500 million euros less than the initial maximum price. The first five trains must be delivered within three years and four months, with all 30 trains to be delivered within five years.

Velaro Novo train specifications

The Velaro Novo trains will operate on the Barcelona-Madrid route and are designed to reach speeds of 350 km/h, 30 km/h faster than in France, once the infrastructure is upgraded. They will increase seating capacity to 520, split into two classes, and improve operational efficiency.

Alstom’s absence from the tender

Alstom, a major train manufacturer, did not participate in the tender. The company stated it had decided not to submit an offer but did not explain its reasons. Alstom emphasized its ongoing commitment to Renfe as a strategic partner in high-speed rail projects.
