Firefighters targeted during protests

Firefighters in the Doubs department in France have filed complaints against individuals who attacked them during protests on October 17, which escalated into riots in some areas. The departmental service (SDIS) of the Doubs announced on Monday, October 19, that it has filed three complaints against unidentified perpetrators, citing charges such as "aggravated violence against a person carrying out a public service mission."

Violence against emergency workers

According to the SDIS, several firefighters were targeted during the mobilizations against the high cost of living, with incidents reported in Besançon and Montbéliard. Firefighters were reportedly subjected to stone-throwing and mortar shots, forcing them to retreat without being able to intervene. The SDIS expressed deep regret and condemnation for the violence against rescuers.

Serious consequences of the attacks

Stéphane Beaudoux, the general controller and head of the SDIS of the Doubs, described the acts of violence as "unacceptable," noting that the consequences could have been more severe. He explained that a mortar shot could cause serious burns, disfigure a person, or result in the loss of an eye.

Injury linked to protest violence

A 17-year-old girl lost the use of her left eye on October 17 in Mulhouse, reportedly due to a tear gas grenade. This injury was confirmed by a source close to the investigation, as reported by BFMTV and Politis. The IGPN (National Police Oversight Authority) has been informed of the incident.

Arrests made in Besançon

According to the latest report from the prefecture of the Doubs released on Sunday, nine people were arrested for acts of violence among the 9,500 demonstrators present in Besançon, a relatively small number compared to the total number of participants.
