A significant number of people over the age of 50 in the UK are not fully aware of their options for accessing their pension savings, according to recent research. The findings reveal that about one in three (34%) workers aged over 50 have not yet decided how they will access their pension savings. This lack of clarity is more pronounced among women, with nearly half (46%) of women over 50 who are not yet retired reporting little or no knowledge of their retirement options, compared to just over a third (35%) of men. These results highlight a growing concern about the preparedness of older workers for retirement.
Despite the majority of individuals over 50 believing it is important to seek support before accessing their pension—over four-fifths (81%) agree—nearly a fifth (19%) plan to seek advice only in the year they retire. This delay could leave them unprepared for the complexities of managing their retirement income. Fortunately, there are several resources available to help people make informed decisions. The Government-backed Pension Wise service offers free guidance, while the MoneyHelper website provides pension guides and tools. Pension providers often include retirement calculators to help individuals assess whether their savings are on track for their retirement goals.
In addition to these resources, people can explore Pension UK’s retirement living standards, which provide an estimate of the costs associated with different lifestyles in retirement. For those who need more detailed assistance, taking professional financial advice may be a helpful option. Carolyn Jones, retirement director at Scottish Widows, emphasized the importance of starting the retirement planning process earlier. "We need to bring the conversation forward," she said. "Too many people only fully engage in their retirement planning when they approach the point of taking action. By then, valuable opportunities to plan, prepare and make informed choices may already have been missed."
Jones noted that while the industry is making progress through targeted support, guided retirement journeys, digital advice, and workplace education, more needs to be done. She urged people to "engage earlier, understand your options, and seek advice sooner," adding that the earlier individuals think about their income needs, the more choices and confidence they have to achieve the lifestyle they want. The research, based on surveys conducted by YouGov, included more than 6,200 adults and a further 1,000 UK adults, with over 2,300 of those surveyed being aged over 50.
