A modder named Catflip has launched a project called REDRIVER2, which reimagines the classic 2000 PlayStation game Driver 2 for modern computers. The mod significantly upgrades the original game, offering improvements such as increased rendering distance, which allows players to see more of the game world from the start. The cities in the game have also been enhanced with more vehicles and pedestrians, creating a busier and more immersive environment. One of the most notable additions is the integration of vehicles from the first Driver game, bringing together the car models from both the original PlayStation 1 titles into the same streets. This allows players to experience a broader range of vehicles within the same game world. Additionally, the mod introduces several new mechanics, such as a fuel system that requires players to visit gas stations, a built-in radio, GPS navigation, dynamic weather conditions, and a realistic day/night cycle that affects gameplay. The mod also features new gameplay elements like taxi races and more nuanced police behavior. For example, minor traffic violations can result in fines rather than immediate police chases. The original campaign remains fully playable, although the increased traffic and new mechanics can change the difficulty of some missions. Importantly, all these enhancements are optional, allowing players to choose whether to experience the updated version or return to the classic gameplay. Catflip shared details about the project in a YouTube video, explaining the mod's features and development process. The enhancements give Driver 2 a more modern feel, resembling today's open-world games, while preserving the original driving mechanics and physics that made the game popular in its time.
