8BitDo, a company known for producing retro-style video game controllers, has released special edition versions of its products. One of these is a translucent green series to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Xbox. Additionally, 8BitDo has created themed versions of its controllers for the popular game Tomb Raider, featuring colors and designs inspired by the character Lara Croft.
The Ultimate 3 Tomb Raider controller is priced $20 higher than standard versions of the same model. It is available for pre-order on 8BitDo’s official website, which lists prices in U.S. dollars, even though it ships to France. The Ultimate 3 costs $119.99 (about 105 euros before taxes), while the Pro 3 is $79.99 (about 70 euros before taxes). The Ultimate 3 controller pays tribute to all eras of Tomb Raider, with a golden yellow casing and silhouettes of Lara Croft from the first games to the present. The buttons and sticks are black, with yellow lettering and a golden directional pad. The wireless charging dock matches the design, and the controller connects to Xbox and PC via 2.4 GHz or wired connections, and to Android and Apple devices via Bluetooth.
The Pro 3 controller focuses on the first Tomb Raider game, inspired by a jungle level called The Lost Valley, where Lara encounters a T-Rex. 8BitDo describes the design as a terracotta color with vines, Atlantean symbols, and geometric patterns. The packaging includes two green stick caps, two yellow caps, and a gray rock-like dock. Technically, the Ultimate 3 and Pro 3 controllers are the same as their base models, retaining features like TMR joysticks and Hall effect triggers. These technologies use magnetic sensors to detect stick position without physical contact, preventing the common issue of "drift" in analog sticks.
8BitDo had previously used this technology in the Ultimate 3E, introduced in January at the Las Vegas Consumer Electronics Show. The Ultimate 3 Tomb Raider edition offers the same features as the Lavender and Mossy Lagoon versions, which were sold for $99.99. The additional $20 (about 17 euros) in price is solely for the special design and matching dock.
