A 66-year-old man has been found guilty of sexually assaulting his 7-year-old granddaughter in their family home. The trial, held in Nîmes, France, revealed that the man admitted to the allegations, though he spoke softly and almost inaudibly. The court determined that the incidents, which occurred between 10 and 15 times, involved inappropriate physical contact, including touches, rubs, and kisses, which were classified as sexual assaults under French law. During the trial, the accused told the appellate court that he had an "infatuation" with his granddaughter and described his feelings as a "fusion" with her. He also claimed that "she was tactile," suggesting she initiated some of the contact. However, the court's counselor tried to emphasize the seriousness of his actions, reminding him, "You are talking about your granddaughter here, sir. Do you realize? She is a child and you were 65 years old at the time of the incidents." The judge pointed out that the man had previously claimed there was no coercion in the incidents. The accused finally admitted, "She was not consenting," confirming that the child did not agree to the actions. The abuse took place in his home, where he closed the front door to be alone with the girl. Although the man does not contest his guilt, he is seeking a reduced sentence. The court sentenced him to five years in prison, with the term to be served immediately. He is prohibited from visiting his granddaughter's home or contacting her, and he is also barred from contacting minors. He must register as a sex offender and will be under socio-legal supervision for five years. If he fails to comply with these conditions, he could face an additional two years in prison.
