Uganda has decided not to participate in the Invictus Games, a sporting event for injured military veterans organized by Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex. The decision was announced by General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the head of Uganda’s military, who said the move was to avoid any perception of opposition to King Charles III of the United Kingdom. The general emphasized that Uganda would not take part in events without the king’s approval, stating, “We deeply revere His Majesty King Charles III.” General Kainerugaba made the announcement via the social media platform X, and a Ugandan government spokesperson confirmed the decision to the BBC. The spokesperson noted that the general has the authority to decide whether the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) joins the Invictus Games. They also said that if the stance changes, the general would make it public. The decision comes after a letter from King Charles III was released this week, clarifying that Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan, are no longer working members of the royal family. A report in The Times suggested that General Kainerugaba’s concerns about what it called the “Harry-Meghan nonsense” influenced the decision. In a separate post on X, the general criticized some in the Ministry of Defence for supporting the couple’s activities, stating he had to stop such views immediately and reaffirmed his support for the monarch. Uganda had previously committed to taking part in the next Invictus Games, which will be held in Birmingham, England, next year. This was announced in July when Prince Harry was promoting the event in London. Uganda was the 26th country to join the games. A spokesperson for the Invictus Games said they had not received any formal notice of Uganda’s withdrawal and were seeking clarification from Ugandan contacts. In addition to the withdrawal from the games, General Kainerugaba has used X to express frustration over other military leaders who he claims acted without his approval. He also posted messages about his self-perception, stating, “I consider myself the most handsome, most daring and glorious Commander who ever lived.”
