Reach, the publisher behind the Daily Mirror and Daily Express, is cutting 220 editorial jobs as part of a restructuring plan aimed at adapting to falling online traffic and changing reader behavior. The company will also shut down three online-only publications: KentLive, AberdeenLive, and GalwayBeo. These moves come after a notable drop in traffic from Google searches, partly due to new features like Google's AI Mode and AI Overviews, which allow users to get answers without visiting news sites. Reach stated that the affected titles did not achieve a strong presence in their local markets.
The job cuts are part of a broader cost-cutting strategy, with plans to create 60 new editorial roles focused on subscriptions and long-form video content. Earlier this year, the company warned that 600 roles were at risk, leading to the loss of over 300 editorial positions. Digital revenue for Reach fell by nearly 1% to £128.9 million in the year ending 3 March.
David Higgerson, Reach's chief content officer, described the changes as part of a "mammoth shift" in how audiences consume news and content. He pointed to declining traffic from Google and strong competition from the BBC, which he said often produces content similar to commercial publishers up to 70% of the time. Higgerson emphasized the need to invest in areas where readers spend more time and where revenue reflects the value of the journalism.
Reach currently has a subscription model across six major titles, with 50,000 paid digital subscribers as of now. The company aims to grow this number to 75,000 by the end of its current financial year. It is also shifting its focus from measuring audience engagement by page views to "active engaged time," a metric that reflects how long users spend interacting with content. According to its latest annual report, Reach employed an average of 3,423 staff during the latest financial year, with 2,494 working in editorial and production roles.
