Local opposition halts Ekopol project

The Ekopol project, intended to manage specific waste on land in Taravao, has been halted due to local resistance, even though it had the backing of the Minister of the Environment. The project, proposed by Enviropol, is no longer moving forward in Taravao.

Enviropol seeks new site

Enviropol still views the Vaitaare site as "ideal" for the project but has stated it is looking for an alternative location to proceed "more calmly." The company is exploring other options, including the possibility of purchasing private land.

Municipality sees victory

The municipality of Taiarapu-Est celebrated the project's cancellation as a "victory" for the community, citing "determined mobilization" by residents and a clear stance from the local government. This decision followed months of debate and public opposition.

Public and political support against the project

The mayor of Taravao, Willy Chung Sao, had previously expressed his opposition to the project, supported by the president of the Terehēamanu intercommunal community. The project was seen as a threat to the area’s natural environment, agriculture, and cultural heritage.

Project faces delays and logistical challenges

The Ekopol project is expected to be delayed by 18 to 24 months. Despite support from the Minister of the Environment, Taivini Teai, and meetings with local officials, progress has stalled, particularly regarding the dismantling of wrecks and handling of hazardous waste.

Enviropol explains project goals and concerns

Benoît Sylvestre, general director of Enviropol, emphasized that the Vaitaare site remains ideal but acknowledged delays due to a lack of positive news. He clarified that the project aims to treat waste sustainably and export recyclable materials, reducing pollution in local landfills. However, he noted a misunderstanding about the project’s environmental impact and communication issues with the community.
