Farmer moves state radar during protest

During a protest against sanitary measures for cattle farms in Mende, a young farmer moved an autonomous radar from a state trailer onto his tractor and transported it through the city before abandoning it on a roundabout.

The radar was not a simple device

The radar-trailer was an autonomous device equipped with wheels, used by state services to monitor speed on roads. It was not a simple speed control box mounted on a pole, but a mobile unit that could be relocated as needed.

The cost of the damaged radar

The device had a value exceeding 24,000 euros, and the state requested a “considerable sum” to cover repairs after the incident. The cost of repairs and the temporary absence of speed control on that section of the road were included in the legal claims against the farmer.

Context of the agricultural crisis

The protest occurred amid a tense agricultural context, as contagious nodular dermatitis spread among cattle herds in France. By the end of 2025, over 80 outbreaks had been recorded, prompting strict health measures that affected farmers across the country.

Legal outcome and financial consequences

Nearly a year after the incident, the farmer appeared in court for the theft and transport of the radar. He was fined 500 euros, required to attend a citizenship course, and ordered to pay 3,598 euros in damages to the prefecture of Lozère, plus 254 euros in court fees. The total bill reached 4,352 euros, significantly less than the full value of the device.
