The International Biathlon Union (IBU) has introduced stricter rules about how athletes handle their rifles at the shooting range during competitions. Previously, athletes were allowed to start handling their rifles a few meters away from the shooting range, as long as the rifle remained on their shoulder. This practice is now completely banned under the updated IBU event and competition regulations. In the new version of the rules, article 8.5.4 clearly states that athletes must have their rifle's shoulder strap fully placed on both shoulders and both arms passed through the strap when arriving and leaving the shooting range. This means that the process of removing the rifle can only begin once the athlete has reached the shooting range. If an athlete leaves the range with the rifle improperly positioned, they must stop immediately and correct the situation. According to the regulations, athletes may not resume skiing until they have properly repositioned the rifle in the designated carrying position, as outlined in article 7.1.2. This position requires the rifle to be on the athlete's back, with both arms through the carrying strap and the barrel pointing upward. The IBU also emphasizes that if an athlete accidentally leaves the shooting range without the rifle properly secured, they must stop immediately to fix the issue. These changes aim to ensure safety and consistency during biathlon events. By requiring athletes to handle their rifles only within the designated shooting range, the IBU hopes to reduce the risk of accidents and maintain the integrity of the competition.
