Approximately one year after its initial announcement, the NBA Europe project is progressing toward potential partnerships with major European football clubs. According to The Athletic, the league is in advanced discussions with teams such as Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, and AC Milan. While the official launch of the league is still planned for October 2027, the identities of the permanent franchises may soon be revealed. The NBA is seeking to create a sustainable and financially strong basketball league in Europe, modeled after the successful structures seen in European football. Mark Tatum, the deputy commissioner of the NBA, recently attended the European Club Conference organized by PSG’s president, Nasser Al Khelaifi. His presence signaled that discussions with football clubs are advancing positively. Tatum was seen in talks with representatives from Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Bayern Munich, PSG, and AC Milan—some of which currently lack basketball teams but are considered strong candidates for a permanent role in NBA Europe. The league’s leadership, including George Aivazoglou, head of NBA Europe, is working to secure long-term commitments from these clubs. Tatum noted that the NBA is drawing inspiration from the structure of European football, particularly in the way the NBA Cup, a mid-season tournament, was designed. He explained that one of the goals of the European league is to replicate the success of football in Europe, which remains the most popular sport globally and is a major force in sports commerce. The NBA aims to build a league that is both competitive and financially viable, unlike some existing European basketball competitions that struggle with financial sustainability. The NBA has highlighted that European basketball needs more investment to grow, especially in areas like player development, infrastructure, and training facilities. For example, FC Barcelona’s basketball team reportedly spends more on salaries than it earns in revenue. To address this, the NBA is seeking partners willing to invest in academies, arena construction, and the overall growth of basketball in Europe. The goal is to create a league that benefits all stakeholders, from players and teams to fans and sponsors, while making basketball a more prominent and economically stable sport across the continent.
