Early success and doubts

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, who recently won the Masters 1000 title in Shanghai, revealed in an interview with Caroline Garcia and Borja Durán for their podcast Tennis Insider Club that he had considered quitting tennis after his junior Wimbledon victory in 2017.

Struggles after victory

He described a period of intense pressure and self-doubt following that win, during which he struggled with confidence and lost matches he felt he should have won. Davidovich Fokina also mentioned financial difficulties during his early career, noting that he did not earn enough to continue playing and relied on sponsors to cover travel and other expenses.

Career turnaround

The Spaniard, now ranked 13th in the world, reflected on his journey from those challenging times to achieving his first Masters 1000 title. He explained that in 2024, he took control of his career by moving to Monaco to train with top players and rebuilding his team from scratch without the influence of a coach, physical trainer, physiotherapist, or agent.

Self-directed approach

He emphasized that making his own decisions helped him regain confidence and achieve his current success.
