Performance explores identity and masculinity
Créature(s) is a performance that blends theatre, singing, live music, and other forms of performance to examine how people build their identities and the social rules around masculinity. The show focuses on the journey of a transformist artist, someone who changes their appearance, as they go through a process of transformation.Staging the transformation in real time
The performance shows, in real time, the different stages of the artist’s transformation—the uncertainties, the struggles, and the failures—while being watched by an audience. On stage, a group of six musicians playing brass instruments and two singer-actors represent a traditional, inherited form of masculinity that is seen as a natural truth.Drag performer challenges the group
In contrast to the group of musicians and actors, a drag performer takes on a political role, challenging the group’s identity. As the performance progresses, the group begins to break apart, their certainties are shaken, and their roles become unclear. The music, which highlights brass instruments, supports this emotional journey of self-discovery and resistance.Artists and production details
The performance is directed by Arthur Escriva, with the book and direction by Édouard Signolet. Thomas Gaucher composed the music, and Benjamin El Arbi wrote the lyrics. The cast includes Claude Lastère and Martial Pauliat for comedy and singing, along with several musicians playing brass and other instruments. The production was supported by Opéra de Reims and Région Hauts-de-France, among others.Premiere and reception
