Anna Pirozzi replaces Anastasia Bartoli

Anna Pirozzi, a Neapolitan soprano, has been called in to replace Anastasia Bartoli in the role of Amelia at the Verdi Masked Ball production at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich. The change affects performances up to November 12, with Pirozzi reuniting with Piotr Beczała and Boris Pinkhasovich.

Pirozzi’s experience with the role

Amelia is a role Pirozzi has performed many times before, including her debut at the Teatro Regio in Turin in 2012. She has since performed it in Parma, Barcelona, and Valencia, where critics praised her vocal control and expressive range.

Pirozzi’s past in Munich

Pirozzi previously stepped in for Anja Harteros in the same production in 2016, performing under the baton of Zubin Mehta. She has spoken about those unexpected performances in interviews, and now she is returning to the same role and cast ten years later.

Malin Byström’s debut in London

On November 30, Swedish soprano Malin Byström will make her debut as Amelia in a new production of Philipp Stölzl at London’s Covent Garden. She will perform alongside Charles Castronovo, Aleksei Isaev, and Anita Rachvelishvili.

Byström’s connection to Covent Garden

Byström first appeared at Covent Garden in 2002 in I masnadieri, playing a character named Amalia. Twenty-four years later, she is returning to the same stage as Amelia, a role that marks a new chapter in her career.
