Early life and mysterious illness

Karolina Olsson was born in 1861 on the island of Oknö, near Mönsterås, Sweden. She was the second of six children, with all her siblings being boys.

Onset of the condition

In the autumn of 1875, Karolina began school at the age of 14. A month later, she developed a toothache and general discomfort. Her family initially believed the symptoms were caused by witchcraft or malevolent influence.

Medical response and diagnosis

Her father, a fisherman with limited means, could not afford a doctor. A village midwife was consulted first, and neighbors eventually raised money for a medical visit. The doctor diagnosed a coma and monitored Karolina for a year before reporting her case to a major Scandinavian medical journal.

Hospitalization and lack of progress

In 1892, doctor Johan Emil Almbladh moved Karolina to a hospital for closer observation. Her condition was described as stuporous, with no response to injections or touch. Electric treatments failed, and upon discharge, she was diagnosed with dementia paralytica, a condition linked to late-stage syphilis. However, no infection was found, and she was later labeled as "hysterical," a term used for unexplained medical conditions at the time.

Care and unexplained awakening

After only a month in the hospital, Karolina was sent home and not seen by a doctor again until she awoke in 1908. Her mother cared for her during this time, giving her two glasses of milk daily. Her brothers claimed they never saw her leave her bed, though her father reported seeing her crawl on the floor and speak, only three times over more than three decades.

Medical mystery remains unsolved

Two years after her awakening, doctor Harald Fröderström examined her case and noted that no serious study had been conducted on the exact circumstances of her illness or her awakening. The medical records from the late nineteenth century do not provide clear answers, and the lack of rigorous follow-up, combined with the limited medical knowledge of the time, leaves the case unresolved. No solid scientific explanation has been proposed for her falling asleep or waking up, and the story continues to intrigue due to its resistance to modern rationalization.
