In preparation for the visit of Pope Léon XIV to France at the end of September, the Paris police prefecture issued four decrees on Monday, September 14, to enhance public safety. These measures aim to regulate various activities that could pose a risk during the Pope’s visit, including restrictions on weapons, fireworks, and fuel transport, as well as changes to parking regulations in certain areas of Paris and Seine-Saint-Denis. The restrictions on weapons, fireworks, and fuel will be in effect from Friday, September 25, at 8 a.m. until Saturday, September 26, at 10 p.m. in Paris, and from 8 a.m. to 1 a.m. the following day in Seine-Saint-Denis. The transport and distribution of fuel, including flammable gas, in individual containers such as gasoline cans, are now prohibited. The police cited past incidents where "individuals or groups" have used "incendiary products" against law enforcement, public services, or property, especially vehicles and public buildings. These measures can be extended if needed. In addition to fuel restrictions, the sale, purchase, possession, and transport of certain fireworks are also banned. Specifically, category F4 fireworks, along with pyrotechnic items of categories T2 and P2, are prohibited. Fireworks of categories F2 and F3 can only be used for professional purposes. The carrying of weapons or objects that could be considered weapons is also banned, except for those authorized by law enforcement or other approved individuals. Parking restrictions in the 8th arrondissement of Paris will be in place starting Tuesday, September 15, at 9 a.m. and will remain until October 1, 2026, at 11:59 p.m., affecting twenty streets. These restrictions are part of broader security measures, and the police authority can adjust the measures at any time based on the situation, including advancing, extending, lifting, or reinstating them as needed.
