A trainee police lieutenant was knocked down and struck on the ground by young protesters during demonstrations in Paris. The incident occurred in the 11th district of the capital, place Auguste-Métivier, where the trainee lieutenant was present as reinforcement. According to the Paris police prefecture, she stopped to retrieve a police radio that had fallen to the ground and was then caught up by several individuals who threatened her with death and shouted: "Kill her!" The trainee lieutenant was filmed being chased by several young men before one of them knocked her down with a trip. Once on the ground, she became the target of at least two kicks, which were filmed and shared on social media platforms such as Snapchat. The Paris police prefecture stated that the trainee lieutenant and her colleagues were confronted with a particularly tense situation, in the presence of a hundred protesters targeting police personnel. A complaint was filed by the victim at the 20th district police station in Paris. The incident has caused anger among political officials and a part of internet users. Marine Le Pen relayed the images on X, denouncing "a mob" attacking the police officer "thrown to the ground and molested." The Minister of the Interior, Laurent Nuñez, condemned the attack, stating that "to attack a representative of law and order is intolerable" and offering all his support to the trainee lieutenant as well as to other police officers and military personnel injured during operations that day. He promised that the perpetrators of the attack will be found and prosecuted in court. The government described the student protest movement as having transformed into "urban violence" and condemned an "organized maneuver by LFI and its proxies from the far left." Nearly 2,000 people (1,949) were arrested on Thursday in France in the context of the school blockage movement, joined by students, mainly for assault on persons in authority, violence, and gathering, according to the Ministry of the Interior. The protests, which began as a response to education policy reforms, have escalated into broader unrest, with authorities expressing concern over the increasing levels of confrontation between demonstrators and law enforcement.
