Public event on stroke awareness

A public awareness conference on stroke was organized by the University Hospital of Saint-Étienne and took place on Thursday, October 29, in the Aristide Briand room of the city hall, from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Purpose of the conference

The event aimed to educate attendees on understanding the causes of a stroke, recognizing warning signs, and acting quickly when it occurs. Strokes, caused by a sudden interruption of blood flow in the brain, affect tens of thousands of French people each year.

Stroke statistics in France

In 2022, more than 120,000 adults were hospitalized for a stroke, according to Santé Publique France. The conference included topics such as emergency stroke care, rehabilitation and reintegration after a stroke, a testimony, and prevention.

Recognizing stroke symptoms

Several signs that appear suddenly can alert before a stroke, including a distorted face, sudden weakness in an arm, difficulty speaking, visual disturbances, loss of balance, or severe headaches. The Lyon Civil Hospices Foundation has developed a mnemonic device to combat strokes: the word "vite," where "V" stands for a paralyzed or distorted face, "i" for inability to move an arm, "t" for speech disorders, and "e" for avoiding the worst by calling 15.

Importance of quick action

"Every minute counts," recalls the University Hospital of Saint-Étienne.
